“It Is Finished”

The three most powerful words ever spoken on this earth were “It is Finished.” Those words come from John 19:30. The Greek word for these 3 words is “tetelestai.” It’s an accounting term that means “paid in full.” The entire debt for sin that needed to be paid has been paid in full. These words were not a cry of defeat but rather a shout of victory! When He said it is finished, that meant it stands finished and it will always be finished.

When Jesus died on the Cross, He restored everything that was lost at the Fall in the Garden of Eden. Because Jesus has paid the price, all we have to do is receive the benefits of that completed work by faith. That’s the Gospel. The Gospel means good news but really this is the greatest news. Nothing is left to be done for our sins to be washed away. Everything that we have need of from God comes through this Finished work. The law has been fulfilled through Christ meaning that we are no longer under that burden. Jesus fulfilled the demands of it.

Now we as Believers have rest available through Christ. Now, one thing you notice about this statement is that Jesus didn’t say that He was finished but rather that “it” is finished. Although Jesus’ main purpose in coming to this earth is complete, the result of His work is enduring. What’s so amazing about this truth is that we don’t have to rely upon our own works in order to obtain anything from God. The fact this work is completed means that we simply just rest in what has already been done. We don’t have to fight the power of the sin nature, but rather we fight the good fight of faith (dependence upon Christ and the Cross), and as a result we are given the grace we need to overcome sin.
